A Case for Richt
Coach Mark Richt just finished his eleventh season as the UGA's head coach, and his first season on the metaphorical "hot seat" following a rocky start to the 2011-2012 season. As we all know, however, the team quickly turned the season around following the two losses out of the box to Boise State and South Carolina, and went on a winning streak that resulted in the Dawgs winning the SEC East title before losing to the now National Champions, LSU Tigers, and the Outback Bowl Champions, Michigan State Spartans.
Despite the fact the team's success this past season has secured Coach Richt's employment with the University, many fans are still calling for Coach Richt's head. For instance, clubmember and friend, Ryan Ralls' main criticism concerns Coach Richt's inability to win the National Title while several other SEC headcoaches have done so in shorter tenures with their respective universities. Such coaches include Urban Meyer and Gene Chizik, who won the National Championship for Florida and Auburn, respectively, their second year as headcoach of these universities, Nick Saban who has won three National Championships (one for LSU and one for Alabama) during Richt's tenure at UGA, and Les Miles, who has won one National Championship for LSU during Richt's tenure with the Dawgs.
Despite the fact the Dawgs have not won the National Championship since the Dooley days, there are some accomplishments for which Richt deserves recognition. Specifically, under Richt Georgia has the second highest wins of 106 games in the SEC--second to LSU, who has 115 wins, is tied for first place in the SEC with LSU for finishing nine seasons ranked, and sits on top of the SEC with the most division titles of four SEC East Championships.
All Dawgs are slobbering for a National Title, and agree one is a longtime comming. Given the accomplishments of Richt in the most competitive confernece in the nation, there should be no doubt he has the ability to secure one--hopefully sooner than later, and as the headcoach of UGA. I admit, however, I have always treated UGA as the anual "next-year team," but am confident the 2012-2013 season will be a success for Coach Richt.
